Prepping for NaNoWriMo19

This is my first year trying to participate in NaNoWriMo. I didn’t think I would come this far honestly because I’ve been just so busy getting my wedding planned and working full time. But I’ve been thinking of possibly starting a manuscript of some kind, so when I heard of this contest, I thought maybe I can do this.

For those of you who don’t know what NaNoWriMo is, it’s a 30 day contest that begins at the beginning of November and lasts until the end of the month. The main goal is to complete a novel of 50k words. But honestly, even if you don’t hit the 50k mark, I’d still salute you for getting 30k or 40. It’s a lot of work, and I feel that if you push yourself so much everyday, you won’t really enjoy the writing experience. Definitely try to reach your goals for the day! But don’t overdo yourself in the process !

At the end of NaNoWriMo, you’ll get a prize! You’ll get discounts on the merchandise from their website, and if I’m not mistaking, you get to print your manuscript out for free!

How do I record my daily word count?

On the website you need to log in here at http://NaNoWriMo.com . Once you’re logged in you can create your profile ! After you’re finished, you’ll see a little button that says, My NaNoWriMo and then under that click the button that says Stats. Here you can see your progress! Now here’s the deal, you can’t enter any progress (word count) until the contest begins on November 1st. Then once it starts, you’ll see you can edit and add your daily word count any time. I thought I should explain that because honestly I was having trouble trying to figure out when and where to put my progress too. So I hope this helped anyone who may feel lost, lol.

Am I required to outline?

Nope! The best thing I’m finding about this contest is that You can do whatever you want however you want! I think it’s great because this contest doesn’t restrict you in any way, shape or form! It’s a go with the flow kind of a contest and even if you don’t pass the 50k goal, congrats, you attempted to write a novel ! I think that’s a great accomplishment and it’s not easy to just up and write like that.

Again, I hope this post can help some of you out a little. I’m thinking of posting my progress on here for the contest, but that depends on many things lol.

To those of you who’re set on joining, good luck to you ! I hope we can be friends and maybe work together! Writers need to stick together!

What’s my Novel about ?

At the library in my college

So you’re probably wondering , ‘is she ever going to explain what her novel is about?’..I was thinking of keeping it to myself, but why not give a short sneak peek into what I’m so excited about writing next month?!

I won’t say the title, but I’ll explain the plot to you. It’s about a girl that lives on a distant island off the coast of Madagascar( I made it allllll up in my little ol’ head lol). Now on the island there’s two sanctions that have been fighting each other since as long as they lived there. Finding out her father was killed for no reason, brings her to the decision of becoming a leader, and in short, a warrior. There’s a few mysteries involved in the story which makes it pop out to the audience I want to attract. There’s definitely fighting scenes, and probably a tear-jerker now that I’m thinking of it, lol.

That’s all I’ll say about the story. It’s really coming along quite nicely and I can’t wait to start cracking with it on NaNoWriMo!

What made me want to write something like this? I’m a writer who writes with emotion and feeling. I like to feel, taste, and touch every little aspect of my stories because that’s just how I love to read books. I remember when I was taking my writing and English classes in college and all I wanted to do was show my teacher how readers my age would probably want to read something that could be relatable in their own life. My teacher encouraged me and I got 100’s the whole semester because I worked hard and loved what I was doing! I wrote about sad times in my life, and good ones. But I recognized that every time I showed a classmate my story, they loved the scenes when something was emotionally relatable or they’d say, ‘man, it’s like I was right there in the middle of that! I could experience it for myself!’ That’s when I began thinking that I should consider writing a novel.

So that’s enough of me ranting lol, I didn’t write this post to brag about my progress…just wanted to share some fun facts with you guys. I love writing and a writer should be able to feel comfortable enough to express that.

Thanks for reading!

Outlining my Novel

I’ve been so excited to start writing for NaNoWriMo19 that I couldn’t wait to begin prepping my outline! At first, I didn’t know if I wanted to go ahead of myself by writing it. I knew from a past full of attempted projects, I would get too focused on one chapter that I’d forget to do the others. The results were, obviously, that I never finished a book. But since joining NaNoWriMo, I can’t explain how much confidence I’ve gained just by reading everyone’s stories or by going on YouTube and searching for all the writers I never knew existed! For a writer, I’ve learned how it’s important to interact with others during a project. It encourages me to do more writing sprints, try to beat old word counts, and attempt to do even better on the next ones!

So I decided to start a outline in hopes that I’d get some kind of ideas down on paper before November comes. Boy, I’ve been in shock at how much I’ve written in just 5 days..over 4000 words and it’s been a wonderful experience for me.

How do I outline?

I know how to properly outline an essay or short story, but I wanted to do something a little different with this outline. Instead of going by proper steps (A. 1. 2. 3. B. 1. 2. 3….etc)…I decided to use bullet points and only write down important scenes I knew I’d use as a backbone for the novel. It’s helped because I don’t revise it, or look over it. I just get all my thoughts out and start typing. I couldn’t believe the feeling when I looked at the word count. I finally felt like I was getting to where I needed to be in order to start the novel in November.

I think having no structure before starting NaNoWriMo is risky. I’d prefer to take the time now and prep up as much as I can, then be in the middle of a scene in the middle of the month, and not know where to start next. It helps too that we don’t HAVE to do certain things for this competition. We just write and get as much as we can done, our own way.

I love writing about what my thoughts are in this process of prepping. I hope it encourages some of you to try and get a story going. Writing is becoming a lost art, and I believe that when the writers today reach out of their shy life, and start showing people the fun in writing, people will want to experience it for themselves.

Have a great day writing!

My First Post!

Hello! I’m Mia Joy! I created this blog so I could learn more about what it feels like to be a blogger. I’ve tried so many other websites but wordpress seemed to be easier to understand as far as creating a blog for the first time.

I love writing, but my struggle was keeping up with starting a book and not getting bored with my subject or plot. I have so many ideas of what I want to write so it gets hard to focus on one idea without thinking of another. I really want to become a published author one day, but I know it’s going to take a lot of hard work and perseverance. I thought that creating a blog would somehow help me grasp the writing world better.

This blog will be about many things, many interests I have. I’ll be honest and say I’m a christian, and I’m not ashamed to say it. I love my religion but I’m not someone who’d shove it down your throat. Honesty is the best policy so I wanted to come out and say that little fact about me.

I’m engaged! I’ll be getting married in April of 2020 next year and I’m beyond excited!! His name is Ben and we’ve been in a relationship for almost quite some time now. Our story is quite awesome, but I’ll share the details of that some other time. I’m marrying the man of my dreams and I simply can’t wait!!

I’m in school studying to become an Administrative Assistant for Business. I’m a full time student now and I’ll hopefully be getting my certificate in May of 2020. I’ve changed my major at least 3 times. But that’s what college is all about! It’s hard to find something you want to do for the rest of your life. So I’m glad I’ve finally settled on something I want to finish.

I play 3 instruments; piano, guitar, and cello. I took cello for 4 years and piano for 5 years at a music school. My dad taught me how to play guitar when I was very little and I’ve loved it ever since. I hate reading notes, but I’m great at memorizing and figuring out the chords by ear. I love music and I think it’s the best way to express yourself when you have no words to.

So that’s all for this post, I really REALLY want to be consistent on here. I think making this blog is going to help me lots!

Thank you and have a great evening!

~MJ
